Transforming Reactions
We are continuing work with the theme of observing and transforming unpleasant emotions. To be present with observation and see the arising of reactions requires steady and vigilant work. As the character of Hamlet declares, "the readiness is all!"
Readiness begins with regular returns to presence in the instrument of the body, in sensation. If there is a basis in sensation I am prepared when the reactions come along. Then their appearance serves as a reminder to struggle with the impulse to dramatize or express the emotion, and come more deeply into presence.
The aim is to directly experience the reaction in the body -- noticing associated tensions and the sensation of excited hormones we associate with terms like "adrenaline". Regardless of what they are called, the important thing is to sense and observe their appearance in my body.
With observation and presence is acceptance. It is a big thing to leave off trying to fix the state and make it more pleasant. For a process of transformation to unfold I have to be willing to be with what is, as it is, even to embrace the reaction in the way one would hold a frightened child close.
With presence as the observer in the unfolding experience new possibilities emerge. For instance I may catch a glimpse of the story giving rise to the reaction. There is always a narrative with "me" as its principle character. It is this narrative which gives rise to a perception of existential danger arousing the impulses of fighting and fleeing. If I can see that what I am taking as real is actually a story, I am afforded the choice -- to keep telling the story, or let it go and come into presence in the experience arising in the moment.
This process is never one and done. It cannot be a quick fix. I have to remember and repeat a thousand times to shift the pattern and truly transform the powerful negative emotions into the finer substances of vitality, presence, creativity.
The theme is encapsulated in the admonition from Gurdjieff "learn to be able to bear the unpleasant manifestations of others".
Our morning exercise is working with I AM with the breath and blending.
We are pausing together on each third hour to recollect ourselves and tap into the relational field of the group.
Also to pause for a few breaths and recollect in the intervals between activities.
